Summer is for love, and for reconnecting with your spouse.

Summer love: reconnect with your spouse this summer. | Bethesda Couples Counseling“Summer loving had me a blast.
Summer loving happened so fast.

I met a girl crazy for me.
Met a boy cute as can be…”

Summer is as fun as it is hot, and as busy as it can be… sexy.

Yeah, I said it. Sexy may not be the first word that comes to mind when you think of a summer season filled with trips to the pool, and family vacations, and back to school shopping lists, but perhaps it should be. Perhaps this should be the summer that you make your move, the season that you take the necessary steps to light more than the bonfire in your backyard.

Spend this summer reconnecting with your spouse.

Pick one day a week, and send the kids to bed a little early. Enjoy an ice cold beverage, and those extra few minutes to sit on the back porch; gaze up at the stars, and into each others eyes; and just talk.

Is Grandma coming along on vacation? Go out to dinner. See a movie. Play a round of miniature golf. Your children will love having some one-on-one time with their grandparents, while you and your spouse enjoy a little adult time.

Play hooky, but don’t tell the kids. While they’re off playing with friends or away at camp, Mom and Dad can spend a leisurely morning sipping coffee in bed, or in a favorite coffee shop; or maybe you can hold hands as you stroll along the path at your favorite park.

Get away, all on your own. It’s become one of your greatest pleasures in life, to show your babies the world. But don’t forget how much you love to travel with your spouse. Remember that crazy three-day road trip to Montreal the year you were married? Go. Be spontaneous (but maybe find a babysitter first).

Rediscover yourselves as people, not just parents.

You were people first. You were the girl next door, and the boy of her dreams before you were parents. Somewhere, maybe you’ll have to dig a little deeper, but somewhere in there you’re still those people.

Relationships are hard work, and it may be even harder to find time to be those people again — in between the bedtime stories, and the middle of the night diaper changes, and the sibling rivalries, but it’s worth it to do these things you love with the person you love, in this summer season of your love.
